Students get an in-depth introduction to Slovenian folk poetry, folk music, and folk dance. They come to know the historical overview of folklore material from the earliest records and reconstruction, up until the folk creativity exhibited through contemporary media and social networks. Through texts, videos and audio recordings, students become acquainted with the poetological and content characteristics of folk poetry, traditional musical instruments and folk music genres, and coreological aspects of folk dance. Students get to know the roles and function of said folklore, its performance components, and its embedment in wider cultural environment of regional, ethnic, minority, national, and diasporic communities. Students familiarize with special disciplines within folkloristics, such as ethnomusicology and ethnocoreology, and learn about the history of folk poetry, music, and dance research in Slovenia. They come to know important researchers and collectors as well as some of the institutions (i.e. GNI, RTV) dedicated to collecting and archiving said folk material. Students learn about various forms of folklore reimagining (i.e. folk singers and dancers ensembles, folk-revival groups, festivals) as well as numerous forms of social use of folklore, its involvement in the processes of "heritagization" or “folklorism”; its role in the formation, preservation, and alteration of regional and national identities, in political discourse, in tourism, advertising etc.
