Close readings and in-depth study of selected poems from Romanticism to the present day
Consideration of the social, political and cultural backgrounds to different literary periods, streams and movements
Study of prosody and formal elements of poetry with a focus on structural principles, metrical and syntactical rhythm, sound and rhyme, stanzaic organization and the use of figurative language
Particular attention is paid to those immanent aspects of English poetic language which present special difficulties for non-English readers
