Social, cultural and language stratification.
Relation between social structure and language.
Social factors in language stratification (class, gender, age, ethnicity, religion).
Language in contact, language choice and language varieites in a multicultural context. Linguistic consequences of language contact.
Language adaptation, diglossia, ethnolinguistic vitality, theory of speech domains, opportunities for language use.
Language policy and language planning.
Through their seminar work (including small scale research) students become familiar with sociolonguistic research and uncover phenomena connected with linguistic and social stratification, and language relations in Slovenia, in linguistically mixed border areas, in the EU and elsewhere.
